I started this program with the intention of having an exhibition based on some research. Not sure if I'll be able to integrate the two, but the paintings are coming. They are so different from the works before, and I have little old work still available. Dad's pieces have become part of mine, and are due to go up on the wall soon. The one on Dad is in progress.

The medium of watercolour is considered to be a challenge. There is a translucent, fluidity that no other medium can really capture. For me, it represents that uniqueness of the region, the way everything moves, migrates, changes, yet there is a shine or richness that comes from underneath, the way the white of the water comes through the colour. Other media rarely do that for me. I like the layers that change into other colours and possibilities with the introduction of a new colour, and the unexpectant result. I am never sure what the end result will be, and pleasantly surprised at the end, besides mistakes and mis-steps can be what makes it in the end.

My most current body of work are watercolours and a few pencil drawings.

I think watercolour has strength and therefore use it to create a sense of weight and depth, and not watery. My compositions have a sense of movement, so you explore the entire piece of work.

Art buyers have made references of the work to that of local artist, Jackie Hinkson, an accomplished watercolourist, and American painter, Winslow Homer, who has been one of my favourites since university. Their tropical paintings were among the first to show me how watercolour can be explored and experienced.

There are few artists who work in this medium on the island, so I am privileged to be a local watercolourists.

This is the piece I am working on. It started off with too much concern about looking like the person being used as model, but it won't be that person. It is a weight to concentrate on the piece looking like someone, rather than feeling like that person. Watercolours are a challenge, especially as I need to build colour in layers, so there is no instant gratification, no achieving what I am chasing until much later down the line.

Working more, liking what I am doing. Life is good.

I was looking at American watercolour artists on the internet and again came across a name I recognised but didn't know where I knew the name from. I was looking through Sue Archer's portfolio and none of the images jumped out at me, until I went to her Multiple Images portfolio, and remembered exactly where I knew her work from. I still own the magazine she was featured in when I was at university. I remember how she used tropical imagery with her work and inserted watercolour-painted photographs on top of the image, giving it a graphic element.

Looking to the next piece

it has been a while since i painted people, and i am liking this one. this is a crop of it. trying to create a body of work that work well together, but i am becoming more interested in the painting process than a cohesive body of watercolours. it is a time consuming process, waiting for each layer to dry, but its interesting to watch the process pictures one day at a time - sort of creating that something from nothing - from white paper to person. it is a large piece, and i have not confirmed the background so i'll be with it for a while.

Silk Painting Workshop

Completed an amazing silk painting workshop by Clara Applewhaite Mitchell. She's a Trini living Stateside, who has been doing silk painting and working in the 'industry' of home deco for a number of years. We covered patterns, repeats, half drops, toss designs. Makes me interested in the possibilities. I remember when Linda went for an interview to do fabric and it was so not what we had ever done. Now, many years later, the process and understanding of colour made the whole thing easier, and wishing there was the opportunity to do something on this small isle. But there really is little 'industry' here, and I think I would have fun with it.

The creative arts 'industry' is so expensive and often not worth the effort, locally. The printer give the impression that wrapping paper or any kind of independent paper product design is out of reach, when it should not be. There are a world of opportunities, but its slipped out of reach.

I am now hating to put up work the way other artists' are having their work banditised and re-painted by others, so i don't want to put up images but i want to put up images. sigh. but since i am aiming at showing some work later on, either this year or next, i should really keep it under wraps.

Recent issues of copyright infringement on artists work locally is becoming a cause for concern. There is a respect for having your own way of working, own technique and now it is more of a free-for-all. I like how that looks therefore i will take it as my own and present it as mine. How uncreative to be exactly like someone else.

Be inspired. Everyday. Be inspired by the works of Winslow Homer, Janet Fish, JMW Turner. Be inspired by Jackie Hinkson, Chris Cozier, Eddie Bowen. But to redo what they do/did, without going through the process they took to get there, usually ends up with poor imitations.

Very little is done to protect the interests of the arts, no matter the medium. So the question is, how do you promote your work without your work getting ripped off and being promoted without feedback to you? And how do you take another person's work whole-heartedly and pass it off with your name on it? Sigh.

Old Yellow

My landlord has some beautiful old yellow bowls that have been with them for donkey's years. They very sweetly offer me food in them when there is extra. I am trying to make connections of one piece to another, so the vital supplies which have been constants in every Trini's life, is joining the old yellow bowls. It was of course missing something, so the fabric is a beautiful support on the table. the drawing is done, and I am still liking the white which is supporting the colour. the non-believers been asking me to trim down the white space, 'cause d frame doh need to be so big!' Lucky thing its my choice. I don't wish to crop it and tighten the frame around it, they need to breathe.

Already decided on the next piece, so let's see how long this one takes from start to finish.

A weekend of cleaning, clearing and a revitalized space ended up with the draughting table back in position, the paints coming out and that Crix package being tackled again, after months of workmen being in and around the studio, disrupting the flow of energy.
The grapes of wrath are rich and rosy in colour, waiting for more to happen around them. Getting back in the mood to paint can take so long and then when I start back I wonder how I stopped. Then I remember that life continues to happen around painting and some things take a back seat until it is time to bring them back to their rightful important position, in the front seat.

i finished it. it does not look like anything else i've done but it couldn't be tackled in any other way. the detail in the cup was time consuming, but necessary. it would have been ordinary without the multiple layers of colour and time consuming trying to decide what colours to put and in what order. the challenges of choosing this value, shade and colour over another is tricky. its what makes some pieces take forever to complete.

a not as productive week for me, but besides looking at my junior classes human figure drawings and being impressed that many of them have greatly improved in their ability to 'see', and draw people and get closer to a likeness was a great thing. you need to learn to walk before u can run, and students always want to be experts at what they do first time around. i use the same drawing exercises that were used on me, except I was older.

crix is in progress. i love the crinkle of the plastic and the way it captures light from here and there. elements in this one are similar to a previous piece, mostly because these are the items I own and it links a certain continuity from piece to piece. not that i expect it will be so for all, but a body of work should not be disjunct and separate from itself. i like to see a body of work, not a group of work thrown together than does not feed off of each other. though i always end up with one piece that should probably be the building block for the next body, and its usually the last piece or the first.

my new favourite song is "Raid Rootz Dance" by Morgan Heritage, a remake of the amazing and one and only Steel Pulse.

and the beat goes on. it was a productive week. i managed to have the coconut water lime at a state of completion, even though its not officially done. sometimes you need to learn when to stop, usually easier said than done. but i am not feeling to do any more to it. elsa's feedback was the same. so it has been put away, where i will not look at it and decide, maybe in a month, if it really is complete.

then there was the eclipse, which was a quick piece. it is a layering of many colours, starting with the lightest to a rich indigo background. i like the square shape holding its ground. there was a strong desire to cover the page, as how would it be framed became a fly in the brain, reminding me to think forward to the finished product. but, i don't want to think about framing, it starts to limit the pieces.
eclipse - to cause a total or partial obscuring of another celestial body or to block the light falling on something, or cast a shadow on it.

again, it was a productive week, along with these two paintings there were the drawings, and a half. at this rate i could get a small body of work together. i have four pieces, on hand. and i started a new one today. i like the fine detail of the light and colour on the surface of things. the drawing still needs completion, but maybe tomorrow night, it will be good to start.

Coconut water and lime

I caught a vaps on Saturday and set up a still life, all with plans of execution. I started drawing a drawing as a warm up but was more intent on getting to the painting stage, a feeling or urge I have not had in a while. So through Saturday to night, to Sunday morning to night, to Monday morning, I have been painting and liking it. Better yet because there is no work today so its like another Sunday to paint.

I missed my still lifes. I believe I was trying hard to paint what was not in me and it became a wall I could not get past. Watercolours are amazing in how building in veils can reveal so much about texture and colour. Sometimes applying the paint lightly, without immediate satisfaction, layering on the colour, builds and strengthens the richness of this amazing light which we take for granted. Whites are white, reds are a range of brilliance to strength to paleness. Blues and greens sparkle in a range that many take for granted.

Looking forward to the finished piece, though the pieces and parts as it grows are working well.

the drawing process was engaging. its been a while since i did a drawing and though this is only pieces of the whole, i enjoyed the elements as they slowly got pulled together, randomly. i enjoyed drawing, different from the watercolours, it is challenging in a different way. but with the re-design and replacement of the draughting table in my studio, i managed to be able to see everywhere in the space and pick and choose what i think can work.

This three cup coffee triptych is a beauty. The characters are interesting and entertaining, they have personality. The toothy smile, big eyes, they are each an individual in their cup, very proud of their space. The coffee cup and coffee beans have always been representative of Latin countries, especially Colombia, but where as many are referred to as 'banana republics', many should be referred to as 'coffee republics', even now.

This coffee pot castle is on the ground floor of Bellas Artes. The Cubans are known for their love of coffee. In Miami, cafe Cubano is a way of life. In this work, where there is a limitation of material, there is no want not, waste not in the society, the use of hundreds of these coffee pots makes me wonder where the artist got them all from. They are used and abused, like the Cuban city where they came from, but they are the building structures that exist in this space.

The ground floor is an amazing open space, mostly of sculptures. Ceramic work and wood work.
Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take pictures past the ground floor. Top floor had the paintings I went to see: the Portocarreros, the Victor Manuels, the Amelia Palaez, the Wilfredo Lams. I saw some beautiful hand-drawn Landaluzes. Gorgeous. The ones of the black women, all dressed in 1800s dresses are exquisite. He took the time to look at their features, and not generalise them into characters as many have done when representing women of colour during that time when they were becoming independent women, no longer in the slavery era.

this one ended up going to CARIFESTA X in Guyana. one of '30 outstanding artists under 40, who had never exhibited at CARIFESTA before', so the letter said. other contributors included Brian Wong Won, Ashraph and Adele Todd. love adele's embroidery piece, can't wait to see the new piece she's working on.

a lot of people are doing work but the chance to see the work is now fewer and farther between than they were a year and more ago. disappointing. i want to see the work that is not being shown in the galleries.

most recent completion. this one was mostly done ages ago, but i needed a bit of a push to get to it. the work itself gets a bit more abstract. i'd really like to start getting bigger. i love the landscapes.

also been doing a lot more jewelry pieces, they give much satisfaction in a shorter period of time. there is a joy in seeing a piece come together, when i was not sure what i was going to do and then these rich watercolour colours start blending and working together. my choice of beads are reminiscent of the colours in the paintings - greens, purples, blues.

I recently did a new piece for a local hotel. it is being printed and when its been delivered i'll upload it.

they gave me a short deadline, a period of about 10/14 days. i think working like that works for me, under a bit of pressure, however getting anything else done was quite difficult as i was in studio immediately after work.

this project did allow me a lot of freedom, they asked for a few sketches, i kept them up to date on where i was every few days, and they liked it every step of the way. that is something hard for people, they can only understand the finished piece and not the process involved in getting it there. hey, even i can't guarantee exactly what the finished piece will look like, but i think it was a successful piece. the bamboo took a while as i was not sure how to do it, and it was some trial and error, but it came out better than i thought it would.

A joint exhibition at the Gallery at Fine Arts in Woodbrook, Trinidad called Duo, with painter Elsa Gabrielle Clarke. Good show, we got good reviews. Timing was not great as Trinidad played Bahrain and won two days later and we could get no media coverage after that. Hey, we went to the World Cup 2006!
